Recruiting Massage Therapists to Support Disabled Children in Ukraine

At first glance, Valeria might seem like an unlikely pioneer—young, newly trained, and just beginning her journey with a university degree in rehabilitation, with her current focus therapeutic massage. But what she lacks in experience she more than makes up for in dedication, patience, and heart. Since joining our program, she has quickly become a shining example of what is possible when compassionate professionals are recruited, trained, and supported to work with children with disabilities.

One of her first young patients, Zlata, who was born with Spina Bifida, is now showing remarkable progress—proof that the right touch, given with skill and genuine care, can open the door to meaningful change.

Here is a report from Valeria.

Zlata, is a new patient for me. She is 6 years old. For several years, she received massage treatments from Natasha (my mother). Now I work with Zlata three days a week of the ten-day treatment. Then, Natasha works with her when I am taking university classes, and then I’m back to complete the ten-day treatment.

This sweet child was born with a spinal hernia (spina bifida). Her first operation was to enclose the spinal nerves below the muscle and skin. Zlata had numerous additional operations. She has impaired function of the pelvic organs, multiple deformations of her feet, and kypho-scoliosis.

Her leg movement is significantly limited on both sides. She can not walk independently, and she does not stand without support. Zlata’s emotional state is not consistent. She can be calm, and after a while, she becomes tearful. This is due to both a neurological condition and her physical well-being.

I have applied rehabilitation activities on the treadmill to stimulate her leg muscles. My goal is to improve endurance, and develop the correct motor skills, taking into account her capabilities and physical condition.

It is important to continue regular habilitation, since a systematic approach is crucial for such children. I sincerely believe that, thanks to continued support and rehabilitation measures, we will be able to maximize Zlata’s physical condition and improve her quality of life!

I want to thank you for your trust and for the opportunity to become part of this important cause! For me, this is not only a new stage of professional development, but also a great responsibility. I treasure the opportunity to work to improve and restore the quality of life for children and the military in need of rehabilitation. I am motivated to make every effort to justify your trust and contribute to a common result!

With respect,

Valeria

Sveta and I, and MUCH teams in Ukraine and America are grateful for your help to promote health and well being in Ukraine!

Blessings of love and healing,

Mark and Sveta
