Thirteen months ago, Russia blew up the Kakhovka dam. which flooded the village of Afanasivka. Until the waters receded, the village was an island, and supplies could only be transported by boat. Thirty houses were damaged and need complete rehabilitation. Many emergency response teams helped aid.
In the fall of 2023, MUCH was contacted to help provide heat for the winter. We provided thirty wood burning heaters and briquettes. This was when we met Elana. She spearheaded the projects to help the people in Afanasivka, specifically those in the first five of the thirty houses in need of rehab.
By the third year of this war with Russia, Afanasivka has experienced a year of occupation, a year with no local clean water, and a year of unhealthy living conditions. Below are pictures from five of the houses.
Recently, the city that supplies most of their needs has been under attack. The people of Afanasivka fear for their lives, as they watch missiles fly overhead, on their way to the supply city. Recently, a heat seeking missile exploded in a field very close to Afanasivka. One person was hospitalized, and a few more were injured.
Keep in mind that Afanasivka is not far from eastern Kherson. It remains occupied by Russian soldiers. Western Kherson continues to be under attack, as reported by UNN.
Fear and uncertainty have stopped the people of Afanasivka in their tracks. We have high hopes that MUCH will be able to help them rebuild. Currently, we are waiting for the attacks near Afanasivka to stop. We hope that it will soon be safe to begin working on their houses, turning their houses back into homes.
